. ♪ ♪ ♪ the presidential debates are upon us and many people are describing them as mitt romney's last best chance to establish himself as a serious contender worthy of the white house. it's happened before. john kennedy, ronald reagan, george w. bush, all bounced higher in the polls after credible debate performances and went on to win the white house. whatever the outcome, most agree it's the debates that will give us our best opportunity to evaluate these candidates, sort out their positions and separate truth from fiction. not a moment too soon. according to a new survey from the annenberg public policy center at the university of pennsylvania, with a little over a month to go before election day, the public has a lot to learn about the 2012 presidential race. among its findings, only 51% know the romney-ryan plan would preserve traditional medicare for those 55 and older and retain it as an option for those now younger than that. only about half knew that mitt romney would keep the bush tax cuts in place. fewer than half knew that romney and not obama had promised to increase defense spending

that mitt romney needs 40% of the hispanic vote. i don't like to bet, but i can tell you right now he doesn't have close to 40%. according to a poll it's 32%. what do republicans need to do to attract the latino vote? >> i don't think they can do much. i don't think you will get near the 40%. one of problematic issues a lot of the latino vote die nap sick responsive to specific situations. take for example arizona where there was hen o been an 50% increase in the number of registered voters among latinos there. a lot of it has to do with events in arizona that we all know about. to the extent we have situations like what is taking place in arizona and utah, indiana, georgia and so on, where there is a type of anti-immigrant legislation that has been proposed and debate that it generates, it puts mitt romney and republicans in a tough situation. they can't dismisses those movements on the one hand and say we're not with you, but on the other hand by not doing, that it inhibits latinos from considering republicans as viable option. >> you have your base here, anti immigrant and concerned abou

] it is a cheap joke and i apologize but it does remind me. everybody knows mitt romney is having a rough patch as presidential candidate but a sentence i have not heard a word anywhere if only donald trump had been the nominee. because as you recall he sort of built this campaign around the idea that barack obama was born in kenya or some wherever than the united states, but the campaign did not take off and mitt romney is there for better or worse and in all seriousness when barack obama's parents got married in 1960i think it was, because it was in hawaii, that wasn't a freudian slip, that was just wrong to got married in hawaii and there were people in prison in this country for the racial intermarriage. it was illegal in 1960, and it just gives you an idea of how much the country has changed in a good way. but, right after richard nixon became president, four vacancies appear on the supreme court. you never know how that will work. jimmy carter was the only proven to serve a full term without having a single nominee. but richard nixon was on the president for five and a half years. you wil
